You are so right. One of the most enlightening books that reaches out and exposes design in that context is World Changing by Alex Steffen - http://www.worldchanging.com/book/ - published in 2006. The miraculously positive take on how design answers global concerns on topics such as the future of food, biodiversity and many others reassures me that we have incredibly smart people at the helm, people much like Dr. Temple Grandin. Thank you for sharing.

I agree. And would add that the difference between good design and bad design is that good design gets your message across and bad design turns people away. It's that dramatic of a difference.
It's always been this way, but not always articulated as such. It used to be said, (erroneously) that you can't judge a book by it's cover, but in real life we do all the time. So, it's our job to make the cover reflect what's inside, and be an invitation to open the book. On the web everything is magnified. Once a book is in your hand, you are likely to open it, but, when you come to a website looking for information, and it isn't designed to welcome you in, and let you know what you going to get there, your viewers will be off and running - away.
Thanks for the opportunity to comment.

I think you've nailed it, Ken. A balance of intuition and fact distinguishes good design from plain old design. And it's apparent in life outside our homes and consumer lives. The work of Dr. Temple Grandin - www.grandin.com/temple - is an outstanding example of revolutionary design thinking in the world of farm animal handling. I hope that the students you spoke to look beyond the retail consumer world to practice good design. And that people with passion and insight don't feel that they have to enrol in advertising/marketing to make good design.
